Last week we were able to enjoy Genius Hour on Friday. This was a really productive and fun time for the group! We had a few presentations at the end of the hour. One student finished her research about the blobfish and shared the poster that she created. Another group made a hockey game out of a cardboard box. Two students attempted to design a new type of fishing device using a bottle that would act as a bobber. Students were motivated and on task! The creativity and drive in this group is incredible!
Math: We will be beginning a new unit in math this week. We will be starting off by making some flashcards to remember our new vocabulary. Students should quickly flip through these words along with their multiplication cards each night. Writing: We are working on our final drafts of our informational books. Students have put in so much work and they are really turning out nice! We have a tentative plan to have our writing celebration on February 9th and parents are invited! More info will come home soon. Reading: Students will continue their work with non-fiction reading in class. I have seen such a great improvement in reading overall. I am really looking forward to testing the group soon! Social Studies: we are working on our Michigan History unit. We are finishing up our Native American portion and will be moving into fur traders soon! Reminders: Wed - Gym Friday - early release February 5 - 6 - no school winter break

I hope you all enjoyed your weekends! I had a chance to see a few of you at the mother/son bowling event. What a wonderful event put on by our parent club! We are in the review portion of our measurement unit. We will be taking our test on Wednesday! Please be sure to have your child practice their facts each night. If they have completed all of their facts, they should zip through them a few times a week to stay fresh. We will be taking a 5 minute test this week to check our growth. Watch for this to come home! This week's picture is of the students working hard to complete a math task. I am blown away by their growth with this. They other day they solved the problem 43 x 12! That is some big math! We have been having a hard time getting agendas signed each night. Please be sure to sign your child's agenda if they have completed all of their homework. Thank you for your help! Curriculum & Reminders: Math- We are wrapping up our measurement unit this week! Practice those time skills as much as possible. Writing- We are in the process of drafting our chapters for our informational writing. We will be working on identifying glossary words and creating our glossary as well. Reading - This week we are continuing our work with identifying main idea and supporting details. This is a tricky thing for third graders. To practice this at home, use dogonews.com and read an article together. Work together on identifying what the article was mostly about. Social Studies - We are working hard on our history unit. Currently we are learning about the first people in Michigan. We will be focusing on the Three Fires this week. PE - Thursday Library - Friday We have a busy week back! This week we began drafting our informational pieces about animals. Students used the research that they had collected to draft a chapter about habitat and a chapter about diet. They are off to a really great start. We picked up where we left off in math, working in our measurement unit. This week we wrapped up our graphing portion of this unit. The last part of this unit is measuring with a ruler and solving word problems involving measurements. Encourage your child to tell you the time frequently throughout the day (off of an analog clock) so that they can continue to practice this skill. We are working on non-fiction reading right now and our focus is on identifying main idea and supporting details. We will continue to work on this skill throughout the next two weeks. Students will also learn how to compose a text dependent analysis over the next few weeks. They should be continuing to read their good fit books for 20 minutes each night as well. I love this point in the year because their reading really takes flight. Students are pulling some really fun and interesting books and I am seeing a large increase in reading interest! Genius hour will take place on Thursday this week instead of Friday. Thank you for encouraging their creativity and sending in so many materials along the way. We are going to work on making a large class plan that students will have the option to participate in. In the coming months, I will be asking for volunteers during genius hour. If this is something that you are interested in, let me know. I will be looking for someone to help with sewing interests, general building/engineering ideas, and research help. It is a really fun time in our classroom! Please take some time to review our pictures. Some of these pictures are from before break and the activities that took place at that time. Others are from the work students did this week. Have a wonderful week! Reminders: PE - Monday and Friday Math page - due Friday Tuesday - Parent club meeting @ 9:00 |
