What a whirlwind the last few weeks have been. I feel relieved knowing that the craziness of a sick daycare lady, funeral, and destination wedding has come to an end. The class has done an amazing job adjusting and learning while being so respectful with the subs. Thank you again for all of your patience and understanding. Halloween InformationHalloween week has arrived! We will be celebrating by having our annual Halloween parade (weather pending) beginning at 1:00 on Thursday the 29th. Our parade will go from Park, down Van Buren, through the Laurels, and back to the school down Curtis. Please come and watch if you are able! Our Halloween party will take place at 2:35 on Thursday and will go to the end of the day. We will be doing a few fun group games and eating treats. If you have signed up to bring a treat to this party, a note will be coming home on Monday! Rake and RunThank you to those of you who have turned in your Rake and Run slips! This really is such a wonderful and fun event. It is the perfect way to kick off our service projects for the year. If you haven't yet signed up for our Rake and Run, please do so if you are able. It will be taking place on November 6th from 4:00 - 5:30. I am in need of one volunteer to take leaves from our work site to Roark's. If you have a trailer and are willing to make a few trips please send me an email. Mad Minute & MultiplicationStudents have been cruising along in their understanding of multiplication. I am very proud of their hard work! We will continue to test every Monday and Wednesday with new cards being added soon after the test is given. Please be sure that your child is practicing their flash cards each night. Focus on getting faster and not using fingers to count. SpellingStudents will have a new spelling list this week. This is a short week so practice hard during the next few days! Final spelling grades will be taken from both these tests as well as the spelling that your child does in their everyday writing. Book Club Sign-UpBook club is one of my favorite things in our class. We have selected our new book, Room One by Andrew Clements, and are planning a super fun mystery party. This book is available at the local libraries as well as on Amazon for $7. If you think that you will be able to attend our book club on December 3rd at 6:00, please send me an email. Curriculum UpdateMath - This week we will be starting up our all new math workshop time. This new workshop will allow for students to receive additional teacher time if needed, as well as a lot of independent practice. We will be starting Unit 2 which is more multiplication. Keep on practicing!
Science - This week we will be learning about plant adaptations. Students will investigate the different ways that plants have adapted to their environments. Be sure to ask them what an adaptation is! Writing- We will be starting our opinion writing unit this week. Students will begin by selecting a topic that they feel they have a strong opinion about. We will be working on writing a five paragraph essay based off of this opinion. Reading - We will be learning about some non-fiction genres of literature and how this can help us to form our opinions on new topics. Reminders: * Please send back your conference forms indicating that you are aware of your time. * PE - Monday & Thursday * Halloween Parade - Thursday @ 1:00 * Halloween Party - Thursday @ 2:35 * Rake & Run - November 6th 4:00 -5:30

Students did a fantastic job balancing a few half day subs last week due to my daycare lady falling ill. Thank you for your flexibility and understanding during that time.
As we go into our third full week of mad minute testing, I need to emphasize the importance of studying these facts each night. It is incredibly important that students learn these facts in a "snap" so that the rest of our math units come easily. Students that are still working to pass their 5s will have additional time during class to practice these facts. Please encourage your child to keep working at them! We had our first Family Book Club last week. We spent some time talking about reading, eating treats, and painting pumpkins to represent the book. Next book club will be Room One by Andrew Clements. This is a fantastic mystery book that I have read to my class in the past. We will be celebrating this book by having a mystery themed party. It will be so much fun! The celebration for this book will take place on December 3rd. We began our science unit last week and we are already having so much fun. Students have begun the process of planning their first experiment. Tomorrow they will be forming a hypothesis and testing. I can't wait to see how these first experiments, completely planned by the students, go! We will be starting our life science unit this week! Reminders: * Please sign your child's agenda each night if they have finished ALL of their homework. * PE - Tuesday & Friday * Friday - wear Be the 1 shirts * Friday - Library day (please send books Donations Needed: * I am looking for a lab coat for our "Top Scientist" to wear during experiments. If anyone has one that we could hang on to, that would be wonderful! * Tiny (short) pencils or gel pens for our science observation journals * Old games that are no longer used in your family that we could use for indoor recess. * Trinkets & candy for monkey buck store. It is hard to believe that October has already arrived! There is a chill in the air and the school has finally reached a comfortable temperature. Now opening our window actually cools us down! This weekend was AMAZING! Saturday was our walk for Livi, and it was so much fun. We painted pumpkins, built model cars, ate yummy food, got our faces painted, danced, and walked along side one of our sweet friends. I was so proud of Liv and proud to see students being THE 1! We sure do have the very best kids at Park! Please enjoy some of the photos from the event. Coming up this week we have our very first book club meeting! This meeting will take place in our classroom from 6pm-7pm. If you are attending and would be willing to bring a treat, please email me and I will let you know what to bring! You will not need to bring a treat to every meeting. Curriculum UpdateMath: This week we will continue to work on multiplication. Please continue to study facts every night! We will be taking mad minute tests every Monday & Wednesday. Students will be adding new facts to their bags once they pass. Writing: We will be continuing to draft our personal narratives. Students will be focusing on writing with detail that makes the reader feel as if they are part of the story. Science: We will begin our science this week. Our focus will be on the scientific process. Reading: Students will be working on identifying when important information is revealed in their story. We will also be working on identifying characters and their traits. Reminders: Book Club - Thursday 6pm-7pm PE - Monday & Thursday Library - Friday |
