On Wednesday, March 30th, we took advantage of the beautiful weather and walked over to the ECC to read to the preschoolers. It was so much fun watching the kids turn into little teachers as they shared some favorite titles with the little ones! Following our story time, students enjoyed cookies and played outside with their new friends. It was really a special day!

We had such an amazing time celebrating our VIPs! Hearing just how special these people were was amazing! Students did a fabulous job of hosting their guest and taking good care of them. I cannot thank you all enough for the donations to make it all possible. Please enjoy the photos below. I will be printing off a copy of these photos for your child to take home as well! Reminders: We have many important things to keep in mind this week! Please check out al that we have going on! Monday: We will have a "normal" day, but I will be out of the classroom in the afternoon attending a meeting. Tuesday: 3rd grade book swap! Please remember to send your child in with one to three pre loved books at the third grade level. They will be coming home with some new books to enjoy! Wednesday: We will be reading to the preschoolers. Please be sure that your child arrives on time as we will be leaving shortly after the bell rings in the morning. We will be walking down to the ECC and will return between 10 - 10:15. If your child has a favorite picture book that they would like to bring in to read to a preschooler, they may! Thursday: Wear BE THE 1 shirts! We will be wrapping up our week with a modified read-a-thon in the afternoon to roll us into SPRING BREAK! As March starts to wind down, it seems that we are gaining speed! We have many things coming up that will provide us with loads of fun!
On Friday, March 25th @ 2:15pm we have our Lucky To Have You VIP event taking place. Thank you for responding with your child's VIP person! If you were unable to locate someone, please let me know. We have many special people in the school that would love to be a VIP! If you have a food item donation, please send it in with your child the morning of March 25th. If you have a decoration item or non-food item, please send it in on Thursday so that we can start to prep our room! We are really looking forward to the chance to celebrate the important people in our lives! On March 29th we will be having our third grade book exchange. Your child should bring in 1-3 books, that they have already enjoyed, to exchange for new ones. Remember, these books are not to be new! Simply pick out a third/fourth grade level book that your child has already read and send it in. The kids will receive a ticket for each book that they exchange and will be able to "shop" for a new one. This will be a great way to get a new book before Spring Break begins! On March 30th, we will be heading down to the ECC to read to Mrs.Harmon's preschool class. We will be leaving right after school begins and returning around 10am. Please be sure to have your kiddos to school on time as we will not be waiting for late arrivals. We will be walking there and back so be sure your child is wearing comfortable footwear and an appropriate jacket. We can't wait to share our love of reading with the little ones! I would like to host a book club coming up. A survey will be sent to you to give you an option for dates. Please select what works best for you and I will choose the most popular. Our book will be Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the party will be a blast! Curriculum: Math: We will be working on area and perimeter for the next few weeks. This is a VERY tricky concept that takes a lot of practice. Many of the problems that students will be working on will be in word problem form. Be sure to practice on the homework pages that come home! Science: We have finished light and are moving onto sound. This week we will be investigating how sound moves, learning about echoes, and talking about pitch. Writing: This week we will be working on drafting our body paragraphs to our opinion writing. Students are trying to convince a little girl that Michigan is a great place to live. We have taken a few "tastes" of Michigan so far (Better Made & Faygo) , and will be trying a few more this week! Reading: Students will continue to use their skill of connecting the text to their schema to form an inference. This week is conference week! If you are unsure of what time your conference is, please email me or call the office. I am looking forward to discussing your child's progress with you.
This week we have State Rep Danielle Garcia coming to our room to read! She will be coming in on Monday morning and sharing a favorite story with our class. I am looking forward to having her! VIP day is quickly approaching! Make sure to lock in your VIP for March 25th at 2:15. We will be eating yummy treats and having lots of fun! Thank you all for donating to the party. I know it is going to be a very special event that the kids will always remember! A note will be coming home about our book swap this week. We will be having our 3rd grade book swap on March 29th. Students will bring in 1-3 gently used books that they have already enjoyed. Books should be third grade level (please no picture books or easy readers). For each book that students bring in, they will get a new one to take home! On March 30th, we will be walking over to the ECC to read to a preschool classroom. We will be doing this first thing in the morning and shall return around 10am. Students will have a chance to read to a preschooler and enjoy a yummy treat with them as well. A note will be coming home with students this week! The beautiful weather is starting to roll in and we are preparing to kiss winter goodbye! This can only mean one thing...MARCH which also means it is time for Reading Month! We have a lot of fun planned over the next few weeks along with a whole lot of learning. This week we will have D.E.A.R. day (Drop Everything and Read), as well as "Hats Off the Reading" day on Friday (wear a readable hat). Next week we will have Danielle Garcia, State Representative, reading to our class. SO much fun packed in! I will keep you posted on events as we go through the month.
We also have our VIP day coming up on March 25th. The time was originally listed as 2:30, but I would like to change that time to 2:15 to be sure we have ample time. I have a few more forms coming in and will send home donation information on Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. If you are willing to donate more than one item, please send me a quick email. We are doing pretty well, but may need a few more items. Thank you so much for your help in making our VIP day an event to remember! Conferences are scheduled for March 14, 16, and 17th. Forms have gone home to confirm date and time. If you are unsure of when your conference is, please send me an email and I will confirm for you. Report cards are scheduled to come home on Friday! This week I will be sending home a book club invite. We will be planning on celebrating Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the BEST party!). I will send home a form that gives options for dates. We will see what date works best for the majority of people who wish to read the book and participate! Please send the form back if you plan to attend, or wish to attend! Math: I am so proud of our class! I had some of the highest scores ever for our fractions unit! The kids worked so hard on understanding those tricky number lines. We will be starting our next unit, Polygons, Area and Perimeter, this week. Science: We have started our light and sound unit. This week we will be focused on light! Ask your child about what they are learning and watch for papers to come home. Writing: We will be starting our next unit, Opinion/Essays. Students will be taking a stance on a public issue and proving why they feel the way that they do. Reading: Students will be making inferences this week in reading. We will also be practicing how to respond to our reading. Reminders: PE- Thursday Conferences - March 14, 16, 17 VIP day - March 25th @ 2:15 On Friday, we took our learning to a new level when we had our Pioneer Day.
Students started the day out by playing Oregon Trail on the computer. The kids were shocked when they saw just how much food was needed! We had a lot of people scrambling to try and get more food! Next we took some time to research what a school day for pioneer children looked like. We created a list and were just shocked at some of the rules for both students and the teacher. It was determined that school today is WAY more fun! Students sat down to a penmanship lesson where they practiced cursive writing with their fancy feather pencils. They were also working hard to maintain that posture that we required in pioneer school. That proved to be very tricky! Students had fun writing our cursive letters as well as tickling themselves with their feather. Up next was our yummy snack of corn muffins. We sat in a circle and passed around a jar containing the ingredients for our homemade butter. Students listened to some Little House on the Prairie read aloud while passing the jar around. It didn't take long before our butter took shape! We sprinkled in a little salt to help with the taste and smeared it on our muffins. Students were begging for "just a little more" butter pretty quickly! To round out our day, we split into family groups. We taped out a rectangle that was the same size as a covered wagon. We were all amazed at just how small of a space this was! How in the world would we fit all that we need in that space? Students then took a packing list and began planning for a trip in the covered wagon. Their goal was to stay below 2,000lbs. as this was all that the wagons could carry. Very quickly students remembered the intense need for food that they saw on The Oregon Trail game. It was a lot of fun to listen to them planning out what items were useful and which were not. Many students wanted to take this list home to work on this project. If they finish up a packing list, please send it in for a small prize! Overall, we had a blast investigating the pioneer life a little more closely. Please take a look at our pictures below! |
