Our Kids' Food Basket service project was so much fun! Thank you so much for coming to support this wonderful program. We learned that Nearly 7,000 students each school day are receiving sack suppers from KFB. That is a lot of food! We even learned that KFB has about 200 volunteers a day to be able to keep up that incredible pace. We were told a story about a boy who had begun to collect all of the decorated bags that he received with his supper each day. He papered his walls with these bags saying that it represented people who love him. Park decorated bags around Thanksgiving time. It is pretty neat to think that our bags could have lifted spirits as well. What an inspiring program! We were assigned to make trail mix that would later be packed into the sack suppers. We quickly washed our hands, slipped on our gloves, put on our fancy hairnets, and set to work. Our trail mix was made up of Cheese-Its, Cheerios, craisins, and raisins. We mixed together the mix and packaged it into small snack bags before placing it on the shelves. It is likely that our trail mix will be packed up tomorrow and be in those 7,000 sack suppers! Following our production, we all went over to the wall where we were asked to add our names. Some students even were able to write their names in the cooler! Curriculum Update: PE - Wed. Tuesday, April 28th - Park Art Show @ City Hall Friday - Wear BE THE ONE shirts May 14th - Book Club (details to come) May 19th - M-STEP assessment begins

Today we watched this video called, "The Life of a Plastic Bag." Students were amazed at where the bag finally ended up.
We then took a moment to learn about The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Students were amazed, and disgusted to learn about all of this waste floating around in the ocean.
With this information we are going to be taking on a challenge. Students are challenged to pack a waste FREE lunch next week! If they are able to accomplish this task they will receive a prize.
The second part of our challenge will be to weigh all of our trash in our classroom as well as our recycling. With the information that we gain, we will make a plan to better our classroom for our planet! I hope you all had a chance to enjoy the beautiful weather! As I was out for my run on Saturday, I noticed a large number of cars pulling into the baseball/softball fields. This reminded me that SPRING HAS SPRUNG and it is time to watch some more games! If your child has a schedule of any kind (games, plays, recitals), please let me know dates and times. I would love to cheer these kiddos on outside of school as well if I can make it fit within my family's schedule!
Many of you mentioned different placement ideas for next year for your child. As class lists are built we have many different things to consider to ensure that we have built the best classes we could. I do my best to honor requests, though I can't make any guarantees on exact placement. I can tell you that we work hard as a third grade team to build equitable classes that will meet all students' needs! This coming weekend we have our Kids' Food Basket event on April 26th from 4:00 - 5:00. I will email all who have signed up for this event with a reminder and an address. Do keep in mind that space is limited so I ask that each child come with only one adult! We are also in the process of deciding on our spring project for the year. Details will be coming home shortly! Math: This week we will be finishing up our geometry unit. We will be continuing to focus on area and perimeter word problems. We will review and test the following week. Science: This week we will be beginning our recycling unit. Students will discuss ways to make changes that can help the earth. We will also be talking about the California drought and how it can be helped. Social Studies: For the remainder of the year we will have both science and social studies each day. Grammar will now be taught (reviewed) within our writing workshop. In social studies we will be discussing economics. We will be focusing on goods and services as well as supply and demand. Writing: Students have begun to research their Michigan city. We will wrap up research this week and begin to draft our paragraphs. Reading: We will continue with our social issues unit this week. Students will be looking for social issues to arise in their own books and investigate how their character is effected. Reminders: PE - Tuesday and Friday Parent Club Meeting - Tuesday @7:30pm KFB - Sunday @ 4:00 - 5:00 I hope you all had a marvelous spring break! I think it is just what everyone needed. I had a wonderful time soaking up the sun at Disney with my family. We are now in the final stretch of the school year (how is this possible?). This year is different than others because we have our testing at the end of the year as opposed to the beginning. We will be practicing for our test during intervention time so that all of the students feel comfortable going into test week (end of May). I will be giving mad minute tests every other week for the remainder of the year. Please keep an eye out for these tests to come home. If you see that your child is scoring below 80% on these tests please continue to practice at home. Spelling is also done at this point. Keep an eye on your child's agenda as additional homework will be assigned. Green homework will continue to come home on Monday and be due on Thursday. Curriculum Update: Math - This week we will be working more with area and perimeter. We will be working on decomposing rectangles to find area. Also, please continue to study vocabulary!
