This week we have our body safety presentations. A note went home a week ago about this presentation. The focus is on "safe touch" and teaching students that their body is theirs and they have the right to protect their body. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child being part of this educational presentation.
Continue studying flashcards and helping your child to gain speed, accuracy, and confidence with their facts. Many students are nearly done with their facts! This practice can be done on using an app, a computer game, verbally, or with traditional flashcards. All practice is good practice! Thank you for coming and supporting students in their writing last week! They were very proud of the hard work that they put into their pieces. We will be starting up our literary essay unit this week and learning how to write about our reading. A note was sent home last week about reading to the dogs at Harbor Humane Society on March 7th at 11:15. We are nearly done reading Because of Winn-Dixie, and March is Reading Month is just around the corner so I thought this was the perfect activity! This is completely optional to attend. If you think that you will be able to attend, please send me an email so that I can start to get a count on who to expect! Thanks for your help! Reminders: * Keep on reading Charlotte's Web! We are having fun with the questions! * Tuesday, Feb.18th - Body Safety Presentation @ 1:00-2:00 * Feb.21st - Early Release * Feb. 28th - Movie Night - Charlotte's Web HHS auditorium. 6pm
Last week we packed in a lot of learning and loads of fun! We finished up our measurement unit in math, completed our Read to Learn unit in reading, and made it half way through our informational writing! We are on a roll!
We completed the week with a mini birthday celebration to celebrate Ciri's birthday. This was a surprise that the kids helped to plan to make sure that Ciri had a special day. The class is aware that Ciri's mom and sister are away for 2 months while her sister is receiving critical medical care in Philadelphia. They knew it would be hard to be away from her mom on her birthday, so they planned a little celebration. It was pretty sweet to see how each kid lit up when we finally got to surprise her! I love watching their BIG hearts in action! We are coming up on our last week of this month's homework calendar. Thank you for remembering to sign it when your child has completed their work. I will be sending home a new calendar next week for February. Curriculum: Math - We are starting our new unit, geometry, this week. The first week will be primarily vocabulary. As we learn the terms, students will have flashcards added to their stack to practice. Please try to flip through these each night so that they are aware of the definitions of the words. Continue to practice math facts as well! Students are doing a nice job getting faster with their facts. I would like for them to get to the point of not needing to use their fingers as much! Writing - Students are working on their informational writing. This week we will focus on informational text conventions and will begin to add those to our writing. Soon we will be ready to celebrate our writing. Keep your eyes open for information about a celebration! Reading - We will be starting our new unit that focuses on characters. Students will begin to think about character traits and motivations and how these develop in their stories. They will also be part of a book club with a reading partner so that they are able to have discussions around their books. Social Studies - This week we will be learning about the French and Indian War and the outcome of that conflict. Reminders: Friday - Early Release February 3 & 4 - No School February 5 - Parent Club Meeting 9am
We are back into the swing of things and have so much to learn and look forward to! This week we have our Family Book Club meeting. Our attendance is looking very low, but we will still plan to meet. If you are planning to come and did not fill out the Google Doc, send me a quick email so I can be sure I have the numbers correct! We will meet at 6:00 on Tuesday!
I hope you are getting into the swing of things with our homework calendar. Remember to initial each night if your child completes their reading and fact practice. We will be celebrating our homework calendars at the end of the month! Keep in mind that you do get three freebie days for those hard nights! This week is the 5th grade can drive! Please send in your cans or bottles to help support our 5th graders! On the 21st, Hudsonville is putting on a Screenagers presentation. This presentation is very informative and helps to teach us how to protect our children in this digital age. The presentation takes place at the Freshman Campus Auditorium beginning at 6:00.
We have been hard at work and have branched into some new curriculum! We have begun our measurement unit, started reading our non-fiction, and are working on economics. It has been a lot of fun to see the growth that we have accomplished so far! I can't wait to see how we do the rest of the year!
Our Holiday Music Program is on Tuesday and we start at 7:30. Please have your child to the fellowship hall by 7:15. We will also be leaving school that morning at 9am to practice at the church. Be sure to be on time so that you don't miss the bus! Our class will be shopping the Penguin Patch on Wednesday. If your child would like to participate, please send in money then! Thank you so much for your help with Holiday Hope! We were able to pick up a lot of really great stuff for the family last week. If you have a gift to send in, please send it in by Friday! Our wrapping party will be on Friday at 11:00. We could use some help with this task. The kids will wrap, but they will need some guidance as they wrap the gifts! I am also collecting some wrapping paper and tape if you would like to donate. You can take home extra at the end! Reminders: Tuesday 12/10 - Music Program Wed. 12/11 - Penguin Patch Friday 12/13 - wrapping party @ 11:00 Friday - early release |
