It is finally feeling like winter is coming to a close! Please take a look at your child's snow gear and make sure they have it all. We have loads of orphaned snow items in the lost and found right now! We will be making sure all snow items are out of the classroom this week!
This Thursday we will be spending some time celebrating the amazing work we have done in our last reading and writing units. We have completed the book, Because of Winn-Dixie, and have also completed literary essays based on our reading. On Thursday, we will be taking part in themed activities in the morning, watching the movie as a third grade group, eating some treats, and having a "read-a-thon" in the afternoon. I am in need of some prize/treat type items for Thursday if you are looking to donate! Thank you all for taking the time to come in and celebrate your child's success with me. I am so proud of how far we have come and I know that there is still so much growth ahead. If you have any questions or concerns that we were not able to address, please send me an email and we can set up a time to talk. Reminders: Wed - GYM Thursday - wear a team shirt day! :) Friday - No school - spring break Questions: * What is one book you have enjoyed? * How do you find area? How about perimeter? * What is one thing you are excited about for spring break?

March is Reading Month which means we shine an extra bright light on reading and the value of reading this month! We have a few fun things planned that I will update you on as we go through the month. Below you will find the special days for this week.
Our family book club has been planned. I only have a few slips turned in saying that you would like to attend. We plan to read Word of Mouse by James Patterson. We plan to celebrate the reading of this book with fun activities and yummy treats on April 18th. If you would like to attend but haven't turned in the form, please send me a quick email. This is a fun book to read alongside your 3rd grader. Conference forms have gone home. If you think you form may have become lost in the "mail," please email me and I can let you know your conference time! I look forward to celebrating your child with you. Our big BOGO book fair is coming up! It will be open the week of conferences. This is a great book fair with loads of deals! Be sure to try and sneak down to check it out. Curriculum: Math: In math, we are working on finishing up our fractions unit. Students have been working on plotting fractions on the number line, comparing fractions with like numerators or denominators, and finding equivalent fractions. We hope to test this week. Students have also been working hard in intervention groups to solidify past skills. We will be switching these groups every two weeks so that students have the opportunity to review all past skills. Writing: Students are working on crafting their first ever literary essay. We are doing this essay off of the reading we have done in Because of Winn-Dixie. Last week we learned how to pull evidence from the text. This week we will continue to plan our essays and prepare to draft. Reading: Our character unit is well underway. We are now working hard on being part of a book club and understanding how to have meaningful conversations around our books. Students are especially focused on the character development in their stories. Social Studies: We are working on finishing up our history unit over the next two weeks! This Week's Schedule: Monday - Bring a stuffed animal to read with Monday - Gym Tuesday - Wear a hat with words Friday - GYM Friday - Flashlight Friday - bring a (labeled) flashlight to school to read with. Bonus Questions: * What does the word equivalent mean? * Compare these two fractions 2/4 and 6/4 * What character trait of Opal's are you focused on for your writing?
