We are officially rolling with our curriculum and ready to kick off all of our units now that our initial assessments are complete! I am so excited to dig in with this bright group of learners.
Math: Over the last two weeks we have spent time learning how to participate in number talks. Students are working on strengthening their number sense and questioning each other's thinking to learn more. This coming week we will be diving into our first unit, multiplication and division. Please watch for flashcards to come home this week! Students will be expected to practice these flashcards (3-5 times a week) so that they know them in a snap! The first set will be all 2s and we will build on from there. We will be taking timed tests once a month to track progress in our understanding. Reading: We have been working on developing our stamina and finding good fit books. Please continue to encourage your child to stick with their book (if it is a good fit) and read the same book at home and school. Remind them to write their end page on their reading log! We will be investigating these reading logs soon to help us to set some stamina based goals. Writing: Students had a chance this week to complete their personal narrative on-demand pre assessment. Following that, we practiced our creative writing skills by developing a story based on a given picture. Based on the creativity I saw, I just can't wait to see where these writers can go this year! Watch for those creative stories to come home! This week we will be working on becoming strong third grade writers by studying 3rd grade writing. We will also begin to collect personal narrative (small moment) story ideas in our notebooks. Grammar: We began last week by investigating how capitals work in names and abbreviations. This week we will continue our work with capital letters but be focused on other proper nouns. Social Studies: We are working on learning about the Core Democratic Values. So far we have learned about truth and equality. Discussion Questions: * What do you already know about multiplication? * What is one story idea you have from this summer? * What is one book you can't wait to read? * How have you been kind to someone this week?
