This week is M-STEP week. We will be taking the ELA M-STEP test on Tuesday and Wednesday and our math test will be on Thursday. A few things to note about the M-STEP test: * Please try to get to bed early before these testing days * Please be sure that your child eats a good and filling breakfast in the morning. * We will have some snacks for the M-STEP, but you are welcome to send in an extra snack. We will be taking a snack break in the middle. * Please be sure your child arrives on time. Once our test has begun, we are not allowed to have interruptions so any late child will not be able to join the class until testing is done. * Remind your child that this test is important and should be taken seriously, but that we are already so proud of all that they have accomplished. They are bigger and better than the M-STEP! Field Trip information has gone home. Please be sure to get the form filled out and turned in by Friday. I look forward to a fun filled trip! If you have any questions about the field trip, please email me. We will be having Genius Hour this Friday. Students will have an opportunity to work alongside Dominic's mom as she teaches them how to use a sewing machine to complete pillowcases. I am super excited that the students will have this fun opportunity! The students have decided to donate the pillowcases to refugee children. They will be filled with goodies to be enjoyed!

Last week was a quick one! Hard to believe that a week ago we had an ice day! Below are some of the things that we are up to.
In math, we are on to our next unit. The kids are pretty motivated by this unit because it feels "easy" since it is addition and subtraction. We will be learning about rounding to the nearest 10 and 100 as well. Following this unit, we will be working on multistep word problems. It is hard to believe that we are on our second to last unit! We are almost done with our opinion essays in writing. Students have been working on essays that explain the importance of taking care of the planet and ways to help the earth. Our focus has been on how to stay on topic within our body paragraphs and how to properly indent all five paragraphs. We are working through our biography unit in reading. We are working to understand how the timeframe that the person lived affected their lives. Soon, students will begin working in their own biography books and will be linking their reading to our final writing unit. We are waiting to hear back from transportation about our field trip before we send forms home. As soon as we are confirmed, the form will come home! Our first week back from break went great and super fast! Last week we took our fractions test as well as a large mad minute test. Watch for those grades to come home soon. We will be diving into our next math unit, addition and subtraction, right away.
Our third grade field trip is in the process of being planned. I am working with our destination and transportation to confirm the details. A note will come home this week! The students are pretty excited to know that a field trip is coming up! M-STEP is quickly approaching. We have been doing a little bit of preparing in class. Students have been practicing with how to draw details out of their reading. They have also been working on writing a text dependent analysis. The reading responses that you have seen coming home are from this practice. Though an official grade from these is not reflected on the report card, I am collecting grammar grades each time. Encourage your child to always go back and fix up their mistakes! We will be taking the M-STEP the first week in May. We would like to squeeze in one final book club. This book club will fall in the last two weeks of school. I know that it is a tricky time with spring sports, but we have had such a wonderful time celebrating our reading and want to do it one last time! Please keep an eye out for a note about this as well. Parent Club has a new fundraiser for us this year. On April 25th, they are hosting a sign making party. Forms went home last week, but let me know if you would like another one. The cost is $15 per sign and you do not have to be present to participate; they will send the kits home. This looks like a fun event! Curriculum and Reminders: Math - We will be starting our next unit which is addition and subtraction. We will actually begin with learning how to round. This concept can be tricky! The sang that we use is, "1 through 4 stay on the floor, 5 through 9 climb the vine." Reading - We are working on biographies this week. We are investigating how the time period that a person lived in affected the events in their lives. Writing - This week we will be working on finishing drafting and editing our essays about how to save the earth. Social Studies - We are working on our economics unit. Students are learning about producers, consumers, goods, services, wants, needs, scarcity, and opportunity cost. We will be leading into our economics market place activity soon. Gym - Wednesday Tuesday, April 17 - Parent Club meeting April 25th - Park Parent Club sign making fundraiser |
