Last week was a blast! On Tuesday, we had our first Girls' Group meeting. It was so much fun to work on bracelets and chat with the girls. So much fun, that I forgot to take pictures! I spent a lot of time trying to create a bracelet using a kit that claimed to be appropriate for a 6 year old (it was so tricky!).
Thursday was our second Guys' Group meeting. A few of the boys opted out of the meeting and decided to go out instead. Those that stayed had a blast taking apart different items and seeing the inner workings. A phone and blender were among the favorites! Friday was our Detective Day that the students earned from their hard math work. We started off by solving a few mysteries ourselves. Next, we worked on identifying our classmates' footprints. A few students even brought in magnifying glasses to assist in their detective work. We ended with a fantastic game of identifying the winking suspect! It was a day filled with laughter and fun. Exactly what they needed and deserved! Our editing is in full force and we are in the final stages of publishing our writing. It has been so cool to publish using Google Docs. We will be celebrating our writing on Wednesday at 9:40am. We have Mrs.Earhardt, coming as a guest of honor. Her wonderful story telling has inspired this class so greatly and this is the perfect time to thank her. I believe she even has a very special story to share with our class! Parents are welcome to attend this celebration as well. We will be done by 10:40! SNAP math facts are now complete! I will continue to test students' fact fluency throughout the remainder of the year. Please be sure to have your child study their facts (multiplication and division) frequently. These facts are essential for fourth grade! We are also done with weekly spelling lists. We will be continuing to work on our grammar and specific spelling patterns in class, but we are done with the individual lists. I have decided to stop these two things in order to free us up for other types of homework. Please be sure to watch the agenda for new assignments! This week we will be embarking on a new adventure in Google Docs. Students will be publishing their realistic fiction stories in their Google Docs here at school. This will allow for easy sharing, editing, and commenting. I will be able to give quick feedback while students are working and they will be able to make neat changes. Students will be able to access their Google Docs from home which will make finishing up any additional work at home easy! I will send home some more information about how to access these Google Docs this week!
We are done with our tricky multistep word problem unit. I was so impressed with how well students did on this test. They worked like true detectives finding evidence, solving the problem, and closing the case with the correct label. All students have officially earned their mustache on their detective photo. They are now working towards earning their detective hat! I am so proud of them! On Friday we will be having a Detective Day to celebrate how well students did with this unit. I encourage students to dress like a detective and come to school ready to solve some fun cases! Math: This week we will be beginning our geometry unit. This unit contains a lot of vocabulary! I will be providing students with a baggie to contain their vocabulary. Please practice these vocab words each night with your child! Science: This week we will wrap up our light unit. We will be talking about absorption, and reflection as well as reviewing the previous concepts. Next week we will begin with sound. Grammar: This week we are working through our grammar list, double checking what we need to work more on. We will be looking at apostrophes in contractions this week as well as practicing identifying proper nouns. Writing: We will be publishing on Google Docs this week! Last week I sent home a list of grammar expectations for you to see. This was just an FYI in case you were wondering where 3rd graders should be by the end of the year. Writing: This week will be all about character development and plot development. We will be using thought and detail to make dynamic characters. We will also be expanding the heart of our story to include a lot of detail. Reading: This week students will be working on completing a timeline project based on a biography. We will present these at the end of the week. Reminders: PE- Wednesday Kids' Food Basket - sign up is FULL! April 26th @ 4:00 (directions to come!) Book Club Book - Zoo At the Edge of the World (Book club - May 14th) Pioneer Day & Writing CelebrationTwo weeks ago we had our fort building writing celebration to celebrate our informational writing unit. Students had an opportunity to build forts (thank you Duct Tape!), eat yummy treats, and read different stories. They really had a blast with this and did such a nice job. I was very impressed by these published pieces! Pioneer day was so much fun! Students came in and were given a feather pen (our modern version). They joined me in the Dugout where they were introduced to the pioneer rules. When they learned what was expected of pioneer children, they were speechless! We lined back up and entered the room as pioneer children did, in a boy line and girl line. They sat based on their gender and stood anytime they were talking to the teacher. We practiced cursive with our "feather" pens to start our instruction. Students had a chance to play Oregon Trail, make butter, eat a corn muffin, and create a plan for what they would bring with them on a trip West. It was such a fun day! Take a moment to check out the photos below. Weekly UpdateWe are still in need of donations for the carnival! If you are able to donate an item to our basket, the theme is Rainy Day. Cookie mix, movies, popcorn, games, and art supplies are a few great ideas! We are also still collecting pop and baked goods (baked goods turned in on Friday). Thank you for your support with the carnival. Also, check out our awesome ABC fish! My kids gave it a try and they loved the game! This item will be in our auction at the carnival! Math: This week we continue on with Unit 5. We will be using our detective skills to solve multi-step word problems using all four operations.
Science: This week we will be beginning our light and sound unit! This is a fun unit that involves many experiments. Grammar: Since we are working on realistic fiction writing, understanding how to use quotation marks is so important. This will be our focus for the week. Writing: This week we will be looking back at our story mountains and working on developing our characters through detail. Reading: We will be continuing our biography unit this week. We will be working hard on understanding how different people influenced the lives of the people we study.
