What a beautiful and sunny weekend we have had! I am looking forward to the spring after enjoying this beautiful weather.
We will be celebrating our history unit this week on Thursday. We will be flipping our day to match that of a pioneer child's life. We will play games, learn, make butter, and follow pioneer "rules." If your child wishes to dress for this event, please feel free to dress them up! I can't wait to celebrate all of our learning in this fun way. Curriculum: Math: We will be wrapping up our fractions unit and using this week to review the learned concepts. We will be reviewing plotting fractions on number lines, comparing fractions, and equivalent fractions. Social Studies: We will be wrapping up our history unit by talking about the revolution and Michigan becoming a state. Writing: Students are in the publishing phase of their realistic fiction stories. I have been so impressed by the amount of detail that students have added into these stories! Science: We will be starting our next science unit on Friday. We will be studying light and sound.

Thank you so much to all who donated and volunteered to help at our party! Candy science was a success. Please take a moment to review the pictures below.
This week we will be working a lot more with a tool called Study Island. This will be a web based tool that will help us to prepare for the M-STEP and enhance what we have learned. Study Island will be used at school, however we still have Moby Max set up for practice. Please encourage your child to do Moby Max a few times a week. I have set up a contest for students to compete in to make it a little more fun. Along with Moby Max, please have your child continue to work on their typing skills. I just received my first paper turned in for typing practice and I am looking forward to getting many more. If you need another practice sheet, please email me. Curriculum: Math: We will be continuing our work on fractions. This week we will be focusing on equivalent fractions. Social Studies: We will be working on pioneers this week. We will be investigating how Michigan's first settlers lived and will be comparing our lives with theirs. We will end this week with a fun pioneer day on Friday in which we will transform our school day to match a pioneer day. Writing: This week we will be working on wrapping up our realistic fiction stories. I can't wait to read these stories! They have worked so hard on them. Reading: We will be using the "Little House" books to connect our social studies lessons to our reading. We will be using our comparison tools to compare their lives to our current lives. We started off the day with writing about what an everyday superhero is to us. We talked about how students within our classroom have been superheroes when we have needed it. The kids made a page that was placed into a booklet and given to Livi as a good luck token for her surgery tomorrow. It was so special hearing how each kid views everyday superheroes.
Later we watched an inspirational clip about a boy who was born with challenges, but does not view it as a negative. The kids were amazed with this 9 year old boy and it brought up many great discussions about how we can find positive things even when life seems so hard. We then listened to the song Brave, by Sarah Bareilles, and the kids shared "how big there brave is." Stories of all kinds were shared that really took my breath away. We really do have some of the bravest kids I know. Finally, we took some time to select superhero traits for each other and created a customized bracelet to wear using color coded beads. Ask your child if they can recall what the colors on their bracelet stand for! I want to thank you for sharing your BRAVE superhero children with me everyday. Each one of them is remarkable and I could not be a prouder teacher. What a special day to remember! Celebrations:
I wanted to share with you a few celebrations from the last two weeks. First up are our Mathletes. These are students who have passed ALL multiplication and division facts. Way to go Autumn, Sami, and Parker! Next we have our blogger of the week. Last week our blogger of the week was Olivia. This week we are celebrating Evie's blogging abilities. Keep up the blogging! Our current high typer in McKenzie. Keep up that typing practice. I am seeing a large increase in our numbers! Parties: This week we are going to be celebrating in two different ways. The first thing that we are celebrating is all of the brave superheroes in our classroom. Each one of the students in our classroom have shown such strength, bravery, and hard work and I would love the chance to celebrate this. We will be wearing purple and superhero capes (or towels with a binder clip!). In the afternoon we will be exploring what makes each one of us strong and brave through some learning activities. I am really looking forward to this fun celebration. Our Valentine's Day Party will be on Friday at 2:40. Students will be distributing their Valentine's earlier in the day so that we can get right to our candy science. If you have signed up to donate candy or a material to our science experiments, please send them in on Thursday so that I know if I need to pick up anything additional. We will start our party off right away with treats (2:40 - 3:00) and then move into our science experiments from 3:00 - 3:35. Curriculum Update: Math- We will be continuing our work on fractions this week. The subjects that we have covered so far have been plotting numbers on number lines, identifying unit fractions, and comparing fractions. Social Studies- We will be working on our history unit this week. We will be wrapping up our studies of the French and Indian War. We will then continue our journey through Michigan History. Writing- We will be working on our details and ending this week with our realistic fiction. Students have done an excellent job so far with creating a story mountain and using it to create their stories. Reading- We are working in realistic fiction and working on using the questioning strategy to deepen our understanding. Reminders: Thursday - WEAR PURPLE Superhero "party" Friday- V-Day party 2:40 Friday - PE Saturday - PC Daddy Daughter Event |
