Last week we had a chance to meet with our reading buddies for the very first time. These buddies come from Mr.Weber's classroom. The third graders are reading with them once a week and encouraging them to use the strategies that they have been taught. I really loved hearing a student say, "man, being a teacher is hard work!" after the kids left! This really made me smile! :)
This week is a major wrap up week for us. We are in the process of editing and publishing our final drafts in writing, reviewing in math, and wrapping up our first unit in reading. With that being said, we will be celebrating our success this week quite a bit! I am very impressed by the strides that have already been made this year with this group of students. Halloween: We have landed on a plan for Halloween! We will be having our parade to the Laurels at 9:20. Please plan to send your child to school dressed in their costume and ready to go. We will be heading out to our parade quickly and then taking our costumes off when we return to school. Be sure your child is wearing appropriate clothing underneath their costume so it can easily be removed (if it is a costume that needs to come off). Our Halloween party will begin at 2:10 and go until 3:00. You are welcome to join us for the party! I will be sending home notes soon to those who volunteered to bring something. You are welcome to take your child home following our party to get a head start on your own Halloween festivities. We will be watching a movie starting at 3:00 while we work on getting the room back in order. Bonus Questions (jot a note in your child's agenda after you ask them!) * What did you write about in writing? What is a good title for your story? * Have you been filling out your reading log at school and at home? If not, grab a new one!! * Solve 14x3 using the distributive property Our week was a busy one with a wet, but fun filled field trip to cap it off! Thank you to all of our chaperones for helping us on this trip. We hope that you were able to enjoy some fun art!
Writing: Students are working so hard on their personal narratives. They have begun their second story and are knee deep in details and dialogue. I have been simply amazed by the words that are hitting the pages. One student said, "It was so quiet it was like the crickets were holding their breath." Another student described in great detail, wiping the sleep from her eyes while her mother clicked off her blowdryer to offer a sweet good morning. They are becoming some awesome authors! We will be finishing up our drafts and selecting our piece to publish in the next week. Math: We are nearing the end of our first math unit! We have just explored the distributive property and students have used it to calculate problems such as 14x7. This week we will be focusing on deepening our understanding of arrays, area, commutative property, distributive property, missing factors, multiplication, and division. Please continue to study flashcards nightly and cut up new cards that come home. Please let me know if you need new cards or flashcard ideas. Reading: Students are working hard on predicting, retelling, and developing GRIT in their reading. We have done a lot of exploring with reading logs and our books. Students have been working with partners to discuss the things that they are working on and to set reading goals. Next week we will be working on figuring out hard words through the use of textual clues, making sense of figurative language, and raising the level of questions that we ask while reading. Social Studies: We have been working on the geography of Michigan. We are currently working on creating our own maps of Michigan. We have learned what a key is as well as what a compass is and how to use it. We will complete these maps this week. Reminders & Questions: October 8th (Tuesday) - Gym October 9th - 9am Parent Club Meeting October 12 - Early Release (wear new BE shirts!) Please tell me if you ask your child these questions! * How would you add detail to fix up a boring sentence like, "My mom baked cookies?" * How is area just like an array? * Ask your child who is the main character in their book. |
