Today was our first Monkey Buck store. Students enjoyed using their hard earned Monkey Bucks to buy different prizes and treats. I am always looking for stuff to put in our store. If you happen to clean out a junk drawer and have items that you think third graders would enjoy, I will take it! Some items that are perfect are:

Halloween InformationAll of our fun Halloween festivities will be taking place on Thursday, October 30th. We will be completing curriculum as usual during the morning, but will have a lot of fun in the afternoon! Please send your child with their costume (school appropriate...no weapons) in their bag. They will change following lunch so that they are in costume for our parade. Weather permitting, we will have our parade at 1:00. The route is Park to Van Buren to 36th, to Curtis, back to Park. We will be walking through the Laurels. However, due to the large number of students and staff walking, we are asking parents to not come into the Laurels, but line the parade route. Our party will take place at 2:30 following second recess. Please feel free to join us! UpdateMath: This week we will continue to work on our second multiplication unit. We will be wrapping it up beginning next week and will test next week as well.
Science: This week we will continue to work on our animal unit. Students will be creating a project to highlight all that they learn about animal adaptations, habitats, and animal groups. Grammar: We will be continuing to work on verbs this week. Students will be learning about action verbs and linking verbs. Writing: This week we will be working on planning our second personal narrative. We will be focusing on raising the quality of our writing by adding detail throughout our writing. Reading: We will continue to investigate author's purpose this week. Reminders: PE - Tuesday Tuesday, October 28 - Turkey Trot @ 4:00pm Thursday - Skating Party 6:30 Last week we had our very first Family Book Club meeting! It was so much fun celebrating our love for reading as a group. Families worked together to make inferences about a family based on (clean) trash that was collected. It was fun seeing how they pieced each piece of information together to come to a conclusion! Following our mystery solving activity, students and parents took some time to paint pumpkins based off of the book. I was very impressed by the artistic talent! Painting a hamster on a pumpkin can be very tricky!
Our next book club meeting will be on December 4th at 6:00. We will be celebrating Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. All are welcome to join! Please remember to keep on studying those SNAP facts each night! We will be taking a test next week to see how we are progressing overall. The goal by the end of third grade is for students to be able to recite all of their multiplication and division facts from memory. We will continue to work on this goal throughout the year!
This week we will be starting something called the "Be the ONE Fun!" We have been working a lot on respecting our classroom, the teacher, the school, and each other. We have had a few lessons in which we discussed what respect is and how sometimes we are disrespectful and we may not even realize it. I have seen a lot of growth in students so far and I know that we will continue to grow. As a way to celebrate and reflect, every week I will have a fun 20 minutes planned. Throughout the week I will keep track of respectful behavior. When it comes time for our fun 20 minutes (which can be a surprise) students that have been responsible and respectful all week to our classroom, each other, teachers, and our school will have a chance to participate in a fun activity or receive a small treat. The activities could vary from playing a game to doing a fun science activity. Students that struggled with following all directions responsibly and acting respectful will use this time to review our classroom promise and rules. They will locate the areas that have been a struggle and formulate an action plan so that they can improve for the following week. It is my hope that this will motivate students to work harder and be mindful of all decisions, both inside and outside of the classroom. It will give us the opportunity to celebrate success and reflect when we need to reflect. I am looking forward to the continued growth that I know I will see! Curriculum Update: Math: This week we will continue to work on multiplication. We will be learning about the order of operations (link) which we will refer to as PEMDAS. Students will learn how to solve multistep problems that involve all four operations. Science: This week we will be presenting our plant adaptations projects that we completed in class. We will be completing the week by beginning our animal portion of the life science unit. Grammar: Last week we focused on figuring out how to use there, their, and they're properly. We will continue to review this throughout the year. This week our focus will be on to, too, and two. Writing: Students did a remarkable job with their first personal narratives. I will be taking some time to read these papers before sending them home. The grade that is earned will only be for informational purposes. The final grade will come from the post assessment later in the school year. This week we will be beginning our second personal narrative unit. During this unit we will be focusing on the craft of writing. Students will be working hard to locate the heart of their stories and elaborate so that they "show" what is happening. Reading: This week we will be reading personal narratives written by published authors. We will be examining these stories for the elements that make them a personal narrative. We will also be looking for the author's purpose and message. Reminders: PE - Monday & Thursday Library - Friday (flashlight Friday as well) Book Club - Thursday 6:00 - 7:00 in our classroom Soup & Sub Pick Up - Tuesday after school Turkey Trot - October 28th Thursday (Oct. 30)
Our first writing celebration was a success! I am so amazed by how the writing pieces turned out. Students poured over their personal narratives adding things like emotion, dialogue, and vivid details to the pages. The amount of work that students poured into their writing was evident as they proudly read over their final drafts.
I want to thank all of the visitors that came to listen! I know that having adults listen and comment on their writing made them feel even more special! Please enjoy some pictures from our celebration. This week was filled with so much learning! Students really enjoyed learning about plants and how they transport water through our fun experiment. We also had a blast checking out all of the different types of seeds that we found around Hudsonville!
