Thank you so much for donating to our Halloween party! It was a bummer that we couldn't do our parade to the Laurel's, but we still had a good time! We decided to have a 3rd grade parade to show off our costumes to each other instead. I have sent out a sign-up for our first student service project. We will be making pies to deliver to people that we feel could use that warm smell and yummy taste in their home. Please join us on November 15th at 4:30 at my home. I will send my address out as we get closer to the date. I am really looking forward to spending some time as a class serving our community! If you would like to participate, please fill out the Google form that has gone out. I will assign items to bring in a few days once I have the sign-up completed. Please know that this is an optional event! I know your families are all so very busy at this time of the year. Conference sign-ups are open! This online program is new to us and we are trying to work out the kinks. Sign up as soon as possible so that I can make plans for my family at home as well. The P.E. Cares Food Drive is starting this week! We have been assigned to fruits and vegetables, though all items are helpful! Please help us to support members of our community by donating items to this event! Reminders: Friday, Nov.15 - Early Release Friday, Nov.15 - Pass the Pie - baking event 4:30 Nov.18 & 20 - Conferences Nov.18 & 20 - Book Fair November 22nd - Rebounderz trip
It felt so great to be back and in the swing of things with the kids! We accomplished a lot and wrapped up a few things as well. We are working hard on setting personal goals and sticking to them. Students are asked to reflect daily on their goal and if they think they have accomplished it. As a group, we are working hard on transitioning quietly and quickly to our next activity.
In math, we have wrapped up our first multiplication unit. We will be starting our next multiplication unit this week. More flashcards will be added to flashcard bags. By the end of this unit we will have all facts 1 - 10. Please remember to have your child practice facts daily. This can be done using an app (there are lots of good free ones!), playing multiplication war, or simply flipping through flashcards. Whatever is motivating to your student works great! We have completed our first reading unit, Building a Reading Life, and have started our Mystery unit. We had a fun scavenger hunt to end our last unit and lead us into this one. During this new unit, students will be doing lots of tracking in their books. They are going to be working on tracking suspects and motives as well as make predictions. This will be a fun unit! We are in the publishing process with our narrative writing. Students are working hard to fix up their stories and make them perfect. We will celebrate our stories at the end of the week with a special treat and share time. This week is our first Family Book Club! The third grade teachers are so excited to celebrate this reading with you! Our Book Club will take place at 6:30 in the school library. Come ready to enjoy treats, discuss, and create stuff from the book! Last week I sat down with the class and discussed how I love taking time to teach their hearts as well as their minds. We spoke about some different options that we could do as a way to use our big hearts to do good. The final vote was for a pie making party where students can make a pie to deliver to someone who could use that warm, home-baked smell in their home. I will look at the calendar and put together a plan to email out soon. Halloween I am trying to figure out just how it is possible that Halloween is next week. October has been a blur. We are asking that your child come dressed in their costume to school on Halloween morning. This will make it easy for us to get lined up and head out to our parade to the Laurel's in the morning. Students will be taking off the bulky portions of their costumes after the parade. Our party will happen from 2:40 - 3:30 on Halloween. I will be sending home treat information this week. I believe I have some blank spaces that still need to be filled so I will include those as well. If you plan to attend, please be sure that you have filled out the background check form! You will not be let in without a background check on file! There will be a check in process that the office will be following. Thank you for helping to keep everyone safe! Football Game I want to remind you that we get to attend the football game this coming Friday for free! I sent an email out earlier with some of the details about the game and where to meet. I will resend that email later this week as that day approaches. We are really looking forward to cheering on Brian and all of our Eagles! Dates: October 24th - Family Book Club @ 6:30 October 31st - Parade 9:05, Party 2:40 November 15 - Early Release
We are officially rolling with our curriculum and ready to kick off all of our units now that our initial assessments are complete! I am so excited to dig in with this bright group of learners.
Math: Over the last two weeks we have spent time learning how to participate in number talks. Students are working on strengthening their number sense and questioning each other's thinking to learn more. This coming week we will be diving into our first unit, multiplication and division. Please watch for flashcards to come home this week! Students will be expected to practice these flashcards (3-5 times a week) so that they know them in a snap! The first set will be all 2s and we will build on from there. We will be taking timed tests once a month to track progress in our understanding. Reading: We have been working on developing our stamina and finding good fit books. Please continue to encourage your child to stick with their book (if it is a good fit) and read the same book at home and school. Remind them to write their end page on their reading log! We will be investigating these reading logs soon to help us to set some stamina based goals. Writing: Students had a chance this week to complete their personal narrative on-demand pre assessment. Following that, we practiced our creative writing skills by developing a story based on a given picture. Based on the creativity I saw, I just can't wait to see where these writers can go this year! Watch for those creative stories to come home! This week we will be working on becoming strong third grade writers by studying 3rd grade writing. We will also begin to collect personal narrative (small moment) story ideas in our notebooks. Grammar: We began last week by investigating how capitals work in names and abbreviations. This week we will continue our work with capital letters but be focused on other proper nouns. Social Studies: We are working on learning about the Core Democratic Values. So far we have learned about truth and equality. Discussion Questions: * What do you already know about multiplication? * What is one story idea you have from this summer? * What is one book you can't wait to read? * How have you been kind to someone this week? Reminders: P.E. - Wednesday Parent Club Meeting - Wednesday Early Release - September 20th Color The Park - October 4th There is nothing quite like the first week of school! I love all the sun kissed faces, perfect pink erasers, fresh hair cuts, and the butterflies in the bellies! We had a wonderful first week together. We spent time learning about each other, doing team building games, reading books, and learning the ropes of third grade. It is clear that this is going to be one fantastic year!
This coming week I will be working on collecting some initial data to help drive our instruction this year. Students will be taking the STAR test which will help me in forming groups for math and make individual plans for reading. I will also be out for most of the day on Thursday and Friday doing reading assessments on each student. On both Thursday and Friday I will be starting the kids off in the morning and back in the classroom for the last hour of the day. One of our parapros will be subbing for the rest of the time. This week we will be starting our reading logs. Students will be coming home each night with a baggie containing their book, log, and sticky notes. As homework, I ask that the kids read at least 20 minutes each night. They will record their stop page on the bottom half of the calendar square. You do not need to sign this calendar, just encourage them to write on it! Please be sure to get the baggie back in their backpack so that they can read the same book at home and at school. :) I know this can be tricky! Questions to ask your child: * What was your favorite activity from the first week of school? * What did you write your personal narrative about? * What does the S in SOAR stand for? Reminders: Thursday - GYM September 20th - Early Release October 4th - Color the Park Here is the supply list for our classroom. I know that supplies can be pricey, so please let me know if you can't get everything. I will purchase extras as well! All supplies will be collected since we use a "community supply" type system. If your child has certain markers or mechanical pencils that they would like to use, those can be kept in a pencil pouch in their backpacks.
Supply List:
* Additional Clorox wipes (we go through a lot!) * Post-it notes * Mechanical pencils (if your child prefers these!) * Gel Pens (to make notebook entries more FUN to write!) * Gently used board games for indoor recess * Fun stickers |
