Last week was busy! We filled it with our final M-STEP test, curriculum, and an egg drop. We are not slowing our pace down just yet. We will now be turning our focus to finishing up our drafts for our wax museum so that we can begin making finals and creating our posters. The kids are doing an amazing job putting together their research to create paragraphs for their posters. The egg drop was a lot of fun! The kids dove right in and started designing all sorts of contraptions to place their egg in. Parachutes quickly were added to try and slow the drop, while others packed their containers full of stuffing! In the end, only a few eggs broke in all of 3rd grade! Not a bad outcome for a first time egg drop! :) Thank you for your support and sending in materials! Reminders: Tuesday - Parent Club meeting 9am Thursday - GYM May 31 - Wax Museum @ 2:45 - 3:30 June 6th - Picnic and Field Day June 7th - Early Release Our ELA M-STEP was a doozy, but the kids tackled it so well. After three long days of testing, we were able to say good-bye to the first round of the M-STEP. We will be completing our math M-STEP on Tuesday this week. Please be sure to have your child to school on time and we will get started right away. This test usually isn't as long, but it is hard to say how long it will take. We are all so excited to be able to kiss this test good-bye! We are in the drafting process for our wax museum projects. Students have been working hard to understand their character and the traits that they have so that they can become that character for the wax museum on May 31st. Below you will find some examples from last year's projects. If you would like to provide alphabet stickers, a specific poster, or other materials for your child's project, we will begin creating posters in a week and a half. Last week, we spent some time exploring during Genius Hour. The projects that the kids have going on are just so much fun! Our group that has worked on creating kits for the homeless has bagged things up and is ready to go! Our group creating chemo kits for kids, has begun the process of collecting for their kits. Kids are exploring the ocean, searching for pollution solutions, creating catapults, and more. I love watching the kids explore during this time! Reminders: Tuesday - M-STEP Thursday - GYM Friday - Early Release May 27th - No School May 31 - Wax Museum 2:30 - 3:15 Last week we continued to compile our research for our wax museum. Students will be working on drafting paragraphs this week. Please be sure to start talking about what your child's costume is going to be and what props they may want to bring in. These can all be homemade items! If you are struggling for ideas, please let me know and I can help. We will be announcing our date of the wax museum this week!
We have worked so hard and the M-STEP test is finally here. It is completely normal for kids to feel a little nervous about this test due to the build up (quiet signs around the building, the practice test, etc.). I have had a lot of conversations with them about how proud I am and how this one test doesn't change anything. We talked about how all they need to do is take their time and do their very best. Here are a few reminders for the M-STEP test: * We will be testing on Tuesday and Wednesday (for those who haven't finished) this week. * Next week we will also be testing on Tuesday. * Make sure your child is to bed on time and is able to eat breakfast in the morning. * Please make sure to arrive on time because we will be beginning right away in the morning. * Pack an extra snack or two. We will take breaks often so that they can use the bathroom and eat a snack. * We only will be testing ELA and Math. * We plan to be done with testing for the day by 1:45.
It is finally feeling like winter is coming to a close! Please take a look at your child's snow gear and make sure they have it all. We have loads of orphaned snow items in the lost and found right now! We will be making sure all snow items are out of the classroom this week!
This Thursday we will be spending some time celebrating the amazing work we have done in our last reading and writing units. We have completed the book, Because of Winn-Dixie, and have also completed literary essays based on our reading. On Thursday, we will be taking part in themed activities in the morning, watching the movie as a third grade group, eating some treats, and having a "read-a-thon" in the afternoon. I am in need of some prize/treat type items for Thursday if you are looking to donate! Thank you all for taking the time to come in and celebrate your child's success with me. I am so proud of how far we have come and I know that there is still so much growth ahead. If you have any questions or concerns that we were not able to address, please send me an email and we can set up a time to talk. Reminders: Wed - GYM Thursday - wear a team shirt day! :) Friday - No school - spring break Questions: * What is one book you have enjoyed? * How do you find area? How about perimeter? * What is one thing you are excited about for spring break? March is Reading Month which means we shine an extra bright light on reading and the value of reading this month! We have a few fun things planned that I will update you on as we go through the month. Below you will find the special days for this week.
Our family book club has been planned. I only have a few slips turned in saying that you would like to attend. We plan to read Word of Mouse by James Patterson. We plan to celebrate the reading of this book with fun activities and yummy treats on April 18th. If you would like to attend but haven't turned in the form, please send me a quick email. This is a fun book to read alongside your 3rd grader. Conference forms have gone home. If you think you form may have become lost in the "mail," please email me and I can let you know your conference time! I look forward to celebrating your child with you. Our big BOGO book fair is coming up! It will be open the week of conferences. This is a great book fair with loads of deals! Be sure to try and sneak down to check it out. Curriculum: Math: In math, we are working on finishing up our fractions unit. Students have been working on plotting fractions on the number line, comparing fractions with like numerators or denominators, and finding equivalent fractions. We hope to test this week. Students have also been working hard in intervention groups to solidify past skills. We will be switching these groups every two weeks so that students have the opportunity to review all past skills. Writing: Students are working on crafting their first ever literary essay. We are doing this essay off of the reading we have done in Because of Winn-Dixie. Last week we learned how to pull evidence from the text. This week we will continue to plan our essays and prepare to draft. Reading: Our character unit is well underway. We are now working hard on being part of a book club and understanding how to have meaningful conversations around our books. Students are especially focused on the character development in their stories. Social Studies: We are working on finishing up our history unit over the next two weeks! This Week's Schedule: Monday - Bring a stuffed animal to read with Monday - Gym Tuesday - Wear a hat with words Friday - GYM Friday - Flashlight Friday - bring a (labeled) flashlight to school to read with. Bonus Questions: * What does the word equivalent mean? * Compare these two fractions 2/4 and 6/4 * What character trait of Opal's are you focused on for your writing?
