We had a great week last week. The kids dove back into their learning so well! One thing that I have emphasized with the kids is that they are now, "professional third graders," meaning that they truly know the expectations and are on their way to becoming 4th graders. With that in mind, students are working hard on staying focused, following directions, and organized in the classroom. Students have done a pretty good job bringing their good fit book home and school each day. We will be continuing this for the remainder of the year. Curriculum Update Writing: We are working on our informational writing pieces. This week we will be focusing on organizing our writing into neat chapters before we begin our writing. We will be using the strategy of boxes and bullets. Math: We are continuing our measurement unit and this week will still be focused on time. We will be talking about how to tell time as minutes before and minutes after an hour. We will also be working on elapsed time and understanding how to find the start time, end time, and time passed. This can be a very tricky concept, so any extra practice is great! Reading: We are working on our non-fiction reading unit which is focused on reading to learn. Students have been working on summarizing a chapter using boxes and bullets to highlight main idea and supporting details. This week we will continue this work with our focus being on the supporting details. Social Studies: We will be continuing our history unit this week. We will continue to learn about the Native Americans that were here in Michigan. We will discuss the importance that waterways played in Native American lives. Update: P.E. - Monday & Friday January 26th - Mother Son Bowling (info. to come home) Questions for an extra $: * How have you improved as a 3rd grader? * What non-fiction topics interest you? * What is your informational writing topic?
