Last Week
Last week our blog was down so I was not able to post. A few fun things took place that I would like to share.
We took a moment to BE THE ONE by picking up garbage around the school. We were surprised at how very much we were able to pick up. We even recycled 7lbs. of plastic and extras (not including our paper) two weeks ago! I was so proud of how seriously the kids took the idea of going green.
Looking Ahead
This week we are keeping very busy finishing up all of our curriculum. I really can't believe I am using the words, "finishing up," already. It puts a lump in my throat! Below you will find curriculum updates.
Thank you so much for all of the spring schedules. I am working hard at getting around to cheer on these kiddos one last time as a third grader! I have a few on the schedule for this week and am hoping that the weather holds out for us. Our final book club meeting will be taking place on May 14th from 6:00 - 7:00. With ball in full swing :) I anticipate that this could be a tricky time to make it. This book club will be a celebration of our reading. We will do some ice cream sundaes and a book exchange. Bring along a third - fifth grade level book that you are finished with and we will do a book swap game. I am looking forward to one last chance to celebrate our reading. There is no doubt that our growth has been tremendous this year! Please take a moment to email me if you plan to attend so that I can get a count. If you would like to donate a topping, let me know in the email! M-STEP is almost here! The long awaited test has nearly arrived and we are ready to roll. We will be testing the week of May 18th and May 25th. Our class will be taking all tests first thing in the morning. Please be sure to have your child eat a good breakfast, get lots of rest, and arrive on time. I will be working hard to remind the students that this is "just a test" and that I am proud of them and all that they have already accomplished. I know it will go great! Curriculum & Reminders: Math: We will be working our way through our fractions unit this week. We will be focusing on plotting fractions on a number line and comparing fractions. This link is great practice! Science: This week in science we will be wrapping up our force and motion unit and moving into Earth's changes. We will be talking about the forces that change the surface of the earth. Social Studies: We will continue to work on Michigan Geography this week. We will be having an assessment at the end of the week in which the students will be decorating Michigan shaped cookies and marking different points in MI. Writing: We will be working on our final personal essay this week. Students will form an opinion, use boxes and bullets to organize their thinking, and begin to draft. Reading: During reading workshop we will review the strategies that we use to identify main idea in a text. Extra: We will be working on forming an opinion on a Michigan topic this week. Students will be investigating the use of wind energy, especially off the shore of Lake Michigan. We will be having a debate soon in which students will practice both their speaking and listening skills while trying to get their point across. Service Learning: We will be completing our final project shortly. Students are in the process of thinking of someone that they would like to deliver a flower to. This person is someone that they think could use a smile or someone who they would like to celebrate. I am encouraging them to try to think outside of immediate family. Details will come home shortly! DATES: PE- Tuesday & Friday Book Club - May 14th @ 6-7 May 15 (Fri) - wear purple to support Caleb Mulder M-STEP - May 18 - 29
