I hope you all enjoyed our first snow day. I was not expecting that call at all! We have a busy week ahead of us filled with learning and loads of fun!
This week we will be having our Valentine's Party on Wednesday. Our party will take place at 2:45. Our plan will be to pass out valentines, play a quick game, eat our treats and open our cards. It is a lot to pack into a short timeframe! You are welcome to attend if you wish, though it will be pretty low key. If your child would like to make a fun box to bring in for their valentines, they are welcome to! Otherwise, I will have paper bags with their names on them that they can use. You may send in boxes any time before our party. We are into our area and perimeter portion of our math unit. This concept always proves to be pretty tricky for third graders and takes a lot of practice to solidify it. We have started with basic area and perimeter, but will be starting with finding missing side lengths shortly. Discussing what real life situations we would use area and perimeter in will be helpful in preparing students for the word problems to come. Our writing celebration has been set for February 23rd at 2:45. The students have spent so much time researching, drafting, illustrating, and publishing their pieces. I can't wait for you to see them! I am still in need of a few animal themed treats for our celebration. If you are willing to help with a treat, let me know and I can give you a few suggestions! Thank you for your continued support. Our book club is up and rolling. We will be celebrating Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on March 6th. Remember to try and read this book along with your child. Our goal with the book club is to encourage oral reading and shared reading. These practices help to build fluency and accuracy in the developing reader. It also encourages conversation which will help with comprehension. We had such a great time at our last book club and can't wait for the rocking party this time! Spelling lists will be coming home shortly for some students. If your child has a spelling list, this is just to help to develop their understanding of spelling patterns. The list will have the pattern listed on the top. Please practice these words each night. The list is pretty long, so practice a few each night. The goal is not for students to memorize words temporarily, but rather for them to learn the spelling pattern (for example, vowel sounds). At the end of the week, I will give them a short quiz that will test 10 of the words. Reminders: Wed - Valentine's Day party @ 2:45 Thursday - GYM
